Elcome International, the leading marine solutions provider and system integrator in the Middle East and one of the largest in the world, today announced that it has been awarded a contract to supply the complete electrical, electronics and ship control package for a cable-­‐handling ship conversion project in the Middle East.

The contract was awarded to Elcome by a shipyard in UAE, which is converting a 140m ro-­‐ro vessel into a 125m cable laying vessel for one of the world’s leading submarine cable installation, maintenance and repair organizations.

Elcome is supplying the ship’s main and emergency switchboards, power distribution and management systems, integrated bridge system, dynamic positioning system, internal and external communications, integrated automation system to UMS class notation, hydrographic reference systems, cable laying, security and safety systems, external and internal lighting, loading management software, tank gauging, draft measurement system, LAN and Wi-­‐Fi networking.

“This project is a good example of the range of technical services and capabilities Elcome can provide for a complex ship conversion project,” said Jimmy Grewal, executive director of Elcome International. “We will work closely with the shipyard and owner to support all aspects of design, documentation, installation, system integration, testing, commissioning and sea trial acceptance.”

The vessel will be equipped to perform cable laying, repair and recovery of all types of underwater telecommunication cables including repeaters up to 400mm and power cables up to 200mm in diameter. The RINA-­‐classed vessel will operate in deep and shallow waters under weather conditions up to Beaufort Scale 7.

The products are being shown to the international maritime market for the first time at SMM 2012 in Hamburg, Germany, September 4-7, 2012.

Moreover, our facility is under the quality control of Det Norske Veritas (DNV).”

Elcome can supply a full turnkey electrical package for marine vessels using in-house manufacturing and proven components from major international electrical suppliers, including distribution boxes, battery chargers, rectifiers, transformers and integrated automation systems.

Target market segments for the new products include bulk and container carriers, multi-utility vessels, anchor handling tug/supply vessels, bollard-pull tugs, offshore supply vessels, and DP1/DP2 diving, pipe-laying and cable-laying vessels, both newbuilds and retrofits, according to Elcome.

Helen, wife of our founder the late Mr. Bill Hardman, and mother of our director Mr. Mike Hardman and his brothers William & Keith, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, 22nd August 2012, at her home in the United Kingdom after a brief illness. Helen first came to Dubai in 1969 and was a well liked member of the community, known to many as the presenter of the first children’s program on Dubai radio. Helen is survived by her three sons, six grandchildren, and a great grandchild.

Maersk Training Svendborg has signed a five-year agreement with the major Middle Eastern marine technology supplier Elcome to conduct courses at their Dubai headquarters. The first courses will be on Marine Technology (MT) equipment for dynamic positioning.

Elcome are the only providers in the Middle East of MT equipment and their business extends beyond the region to the Caspian Sea. In Dubai they have the facilities to demonstrate equipment and now in association with Maersk Training, who have the globally recognized training programmes and instructors, customers can benefit from a complete package.

Twenty participants from the Italian oil giants Saipem have already signed-up and the first of a series of courses will be conducted in early November. Initially using instructors from Maersk Training Svendborg the intention is to establish a solid foundation and calendar and then bring online a locally-based instructor.

The agreement was signed at Elcome’s Dubai headquarters in September between Elcome’s Executive Director Jimmy Grewal and Maersk Training’s Sales and Marketing Manager Mikael Kofod. Mikael explained how the cooperation came about.

Maersk Training has looked upon the Middle East as being full of potential in terms of being a centre for providing a quality workforce for both the oil & gas and maritime industries.

‘I was doing a background study for the region and the name Elcome kept coming up. I set up a meeting with the intention of recommending a training programme to them. Quickly both parties realized that it was not Elcome who needed training but that their customers would most benefit from it. They have excellent facilities and we have the knowhow – it’s a perfect combination,’ says Mikael.

Apart from being a leading equipment supplier Elcome also service ships in the region, averaging between 400 and 600 vessel visits a month.
